1951 - 2009

The Lynchburg Sheriff's Office mournfully retires Badge 1219 in loving memory and honor of Senior Deputy Bill Shumate.

Sr. Deputy Shumate joined the Sheriff's office in 2005 and brought with him dedication and loyalty to both the Sheriff and the Community.
Bill also served his community by volunteering at the Concord Rescue Squad and the Fire Department.

Bill was born June 20, 1951 in Washington, D.C.  During the Vietnam War, he proudly served his country in the U.S. Army, serving in the 101st Airborne Division as an elite sniper.  Bill was an avid Civil War reenactor and was a member of the 11th Virginia Infantry Regt. acting as the unit surgeon and he was an active member of Calvary Chapel Lynchburg.

Bill was the loving husband of Rebecca "Becky" Shumate for more than 33 years.  In addition to his wife, he is survived by eight children and 10 grandchildren.
