Lynchburg Project Lifesaver became a reality after five members of the Lynchburg Sheriff's Office, seven members of the Lynchburg Police Department and a paramedic from the Lynchburg Lifesaving Crew completed joint training on "Project Lifesaver" from the 43rd Virginia Volunteer Search and Rescue, Co. of the Chesapeake Sheriff's Office. Chesapeake Sheriff's Office established this lifesaving program in April of 1999.

Project Lifesaver's mission is to utilize state of the art technology in assisting those who care for victims of Alzheimer's and other Related Mental Dysfunctional Disorders (ARMD) and victims who become lost. These victims include the elderly and even the youngest in our community are afflicted with Down's Syndrome and Autism. There are no boundaries - no one is immune!

A large number of transmitters have been placed on those with Alzheimer's and other Related Mental Dysfunction Disorders throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia. Local emergency teams in Chesapeake, Virginia, responded to calls resulting in an average rescue of 16 minutes.

Lynchburg Project Lifesaver is staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week by a joint search team from member agencies who are activated by pager. These individuals are on call for a ten-day period with assigned vehicles equipped with receiving units.

Three members of the Lynchburg Sheriff's Office recently attended advanced training on Project Lifesaver in aeronautical search and rescue. The three-day training was held in Virginia Beach with the 43rd Virginia Volunteer Search and Rescue Company of the Chesapeake Sheriff's Office.
